Large residential subdivisions and developments are often located on former farms. Although old agricultural fields may have been plowed at one time, the New York State environmental review standards (1994; Revised 2005) do not generally recognize prior plowing as evidence of total site disturbance. Archaeological testing of old farm fields is often required as a function of state and federal permit applications.
