Dr. Schaefer has been with HPI since 1986. Project Director for numerous cultural resource assessments and disturbance memoranda, he has also undertaken extensive primary research, report writing and agency communication, concentrating on the five boroughs of New York City. He has been responsible for devising, implementing, and overseeing documentary analyses designed to assess archaeological and historical potential and project impacts, with emphasis on historical and archival research, report writing, and editing.
Dr. Schaefer is also a member of the editorial advisory board for the journal Historical Archaeology, and serves as associate copy editor. His particular research interests are the archaeology and history of New York City, especially the 17th century Dutch.
